Jono Gibbes to develop into La Rochelle director of rugby in November
Former Ulster head coach Jono Gibbes is to develop into director of rugby at High 14 membership La Rochelle in November.
The New Zealander has agreed a four-year contract with the French membership, with whom he held preliminary talks in Could.
Gibbes has returned to his native nation for private causes and can honour his dedication to take charge of Waikato for a few months.
He spent only one season at Ulster earlier than being granted an early launch from his contract for “household causes”.
The 41-year-old was promoted to the position of head coach at Kingspan Stadium in January following the departure of director of rugby Les Kiss.
Gibbes flew to the west of France to hold talks with La Rochelle throughout a relaxation day for the Ulster squad forward of their Champions Cup play-off win over the Ospreys on 20 Could.
The previous Leinster and Clermont Auvergne forwards coach had agreed to develop into head coach of Waikato within the Mitre Cup and can occupy that position earlier than returning to Europe within the autumn.
La Rochelle completed outdoors the play-off locations within the High14 desk this season and had been in search of a successor to Patrice Collazo, who stepped down after seven years in cost.
