Michael Goolaerts: Former team-mate James Shaw pays tribute

Former team-mate James Shaw has paid tribute to Belgian bike owner Michael Goolaerts, who has died aged 23.

The Veranda’s Willems-Crelan rider fell on the second set of cobbles in the course of the Paris-Roubaix.

He suffered cardiac arrest and was airlifted to hospital in Lille however died at 21:40 BST on Sunday.

Shaw stated: “He is an amazing loss to biking.

“He was a cracking particular person, all the time the one to interrupt the silence with a smile, all the time the one to chortle if it ever went quiet on the dinner desk.

“He was probably the most nice individuals to be round I might ever met.”

Shaw rode with Goolaerts for the Lotto-Soudal under-23 group in 2015 and each have been trainees with the Belgian outfit’s senior group in 2016.
